TB270 - Hagi-yaki Tea Cup set by Tenpōzan 萩焼

TB270 - Hagi-yaki Tea Cup set by Tenpōzan 萩焼

This elegant set of vintage Hagi-yaki (萩焼) yunomi tea cups captures the quiet refinement and organic beauty that define one of Japan’s most beloved ceramic traditions. Consisting of five cups, each piece reflects the subtle variations and individuality that make Hagi ware so highly appreciated.

The cups are finished in a soft, milky glaze with gentle blushes of pink and warm beige tones. A fine network of natural crackles (kannyū) spreads across the surface—an essential characteristic of Hagi-yaki that gradually deepens with use, allowing each cup to develop its own unique patina over time. This evolving beauty perfectly embodies the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, celebrating impermanence and natural imperfection.

Simple yet tactile in form, the cups feature slightly varied silhouettes and unglazed foot rings that reveal the earthy clay beneath. The soft transitions in color evoke the delicate hues of cherry blossoms or early morning light, creating a calming presence in hand.

This set was crafted by Tenpōzan (天鵬山), a kiln located in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture—one of Japan’s most historically significant ceramic regions. Tenpōzan specializes in traditional Hagi-yaki, known for its soft textures and subtle color gradations, continuing a legacy of craftsmanship rooted in centuries of tea culture.
