TB345 - Hagi-yaki yunomi tea cup 萩焼
Vintage item, never used. A Hagi-yaki (萩焼) yunomi crafted by Shiroyama-gama (城山窯), a kiln renowned for preserving the quiet elegance and natural beauty of Hagi ware. Presented in its original signed wooden box (tomobako), this tea cup is a wonderful example of the understated craftsmanship that has made Hagi ceramics a favourite among tea enthusiasts for centuries.
The yunomi is finished in a soft pinkish-beige glaze that gently fades into warm earthy tones, revealing the natural texture of the clay beneath. Delicate throwing lines remain visible around the body, while a subtle raised circular accent adds a quiet decorative touch without disturbing the minimalist aesthetic. The slightly translucent glaze and warm, hand-finished surface embody the essence of wabi-sabi, celebrating simplicity, balance, and the beauty found in natural imperfection.
Hagi ware, produced in Yamaguchi Prefecture, is one of Japan's most celebrated ceramic traditions and has long been treasured in the world of Japanese tea culture. Over time, Hagi-yaki is known to develop a unique character as tea gradually interacts with the porous clay—a cherished phenomenon known as Hagi no Nanabake (萩の七化け), or the "seven transformations of Hagi," where the vessel slowly matures through years of use.
