TB437 - Arita-yaki serving bowl 有田焼
VIntage item, never used. A refined Arita-yaki 有田焼 medium serving bowl / plate (中鉢) made by Kōsen 香泉, decorated in a delicate Kakiemon-style (柿右衛門様式) with an elegant persimmon motif (柿柄).
The dish has a beautifully clean milky-white porcelain body, with a gently rounded, shallow form and a fine red line running around the rim. At the centre is a restrained composition of a slender branch bearing two ripe persimmons (柿 / kaki), painted in soft red-orange with leaves in muted blue and green. The generous white space around the motif gives the piece the light, refined balance closely associated with classic Kakiemon aesthetics.
The persimmon is a familiar autumn motif in Japanese art and tableware. Its warm orange fruit evokes the Japanese countryside in autumn and is often appreciated as a symbol of seasonal abundance, harvest and prosperity.
The decoration is inspired by the celebrated Kakiemon (柿右衛門) tradition of Arita porcelain, which is especially known for its luminous white ground, delicate overglaze colours and asymmetrical compositions surrounded by ample negative space. This piece should be described as Kakiemon-style rather than as a work of the historical Kakiemon kiln itself.
Arita-yaki (有田焼) originates from Arita in Saga Prefecture, one of Japan’s most important porcelain centres, with a ceramic tradition dating back more than four centuries. Arita ware became renowned for fine white porcelain and sophisticated painted decoration, including styles such as Kakiemon.
Its shallow, versatile shape makes it suitable as a nakabachi 中鉢 for serving vegetables, nimono, salads, fruit, sweets or small shared dishes, while its elegant autumn decoration also makes it attractive for display.
