TB68 - Kaga Paulownia Wood Art Set 加賀桐工芸品の栞

This is a traditional Japanese calligraphy (shodō) writing set handcrafted in the Kaga region (加賀), an area celebrated for its fine arts and traditional craftsmanship. The set combines 桐工芸 (Kiri Kōgei – Paulownia Wood Craft) with 加賀蒔絵 (Kaga Maki-e – gold and lacquer inlay decoration), representing a harmonious blend of refined aesthetics and practicality.

The outer case is made from solid paulownia wood (桐, kiri) — lightweight, durable, and resistant to humidity — making it ideal for preserving delicate calligraphy tools. The surface features an elegant Maki-e floral design, crafted with meticulous inlay work using gold, silver, and colored lacquer. This decoration embodies the delicate beauty and sophistication typical of Kaga-style artistry, developed during Japan’s Edo period and refined over generations of artisans.

The calligraphy set is stored in a custom-made paulownia box (桐箱, kiri-bako) with traditional brush calligraphy on the lid and a red seal (印), symbolizing authenticity and the maker’s mark.

Inside, the case includes:
Two calligraphy brushes (筆, fude) with protective caps
One ink stick (墨, sumi)
One inkstone (硯, suzuri) for grinding ink
One water dropper (水滴, suiteki)

These tools are essential for 書道 (shodō) — the Japanese art of calligraphy — allowing users to create beautiful, flowing characters in traditional style.

Kaga Kirikōgeihin (加賀桐工芸品) is a regional specialty (加賀特産) with deep historical roots. The paulownia wood craft of Kaga evolved alongside the region’s famous lacquerware traditions. During the Edo period, artisans developed unique techniques to combine the natural grain and warmth of wood with intricate decorative elements, giving rise to works both beautiful and functional.

The Kaga domain, historically one of the wealthiest feudal regions in Japan (the “百万石の藩” – Domain of One Million Koku), fostered a flourishing arts culture. The craftsmanship of Kaga’s wood and lacquer artisans continues to this day, representing a living cultural legacy and an example of Japan’s intangible cultural heritage.
