TC106 - Arita-yaki Kogo Box 有田焼

TC106 - Arita-yaki Kogo Box 有田焼

This delightful Arita-yaki (有田焼) yuzu-shaped kōgō captures the playful elegance and seasonal charm often found in Japanese tea ceremony utensils. Carefully modeled in the form of a ripe yuzu citrus, the piece features a vivid golden-yellow glaze with delicately textured skin and finely sculpted green leaves resting around the stem, giving it a remarkably lifelike appearance.

The kōgō opens to reveal a small interior space intended for holding incense during tea gatherings. In the tea ceremony, seasonal motifs are deeply appreciated, and the yuzu — a fragrant winter citrus long associated with purification, warmth, and the changing seasons — is a beloved symbol of late autumn and winter in Japan.

Crafted in the tradition of Arita-yaki, one of Japan’s most celebrated porcelain traditions originating in Saga Prefecture, this piece reflects the refined craftsmanship and bright overglaze colors for which Arita ware is renowned. Since the early 17th century, Arita kilns have produced ceramics admired for their precision, elegance, and decorative artistry, ranging from tea utensils to fine export porcelain.

Compact yet full of character, this yuzu kōgō beautifully combines functionality with whimsical naturalism. Its cheerful form and glossy finish make it not only a charming tea ceremony accessory, but also a lovely decorative object for collectors of Japanese ceramics and seasonal folk-inspired wares.
