TC31 - Seto-yaki Chawan – Matcha Bowl by Kato Goto 加藤五陶

Vintage item, never used. This Seto-yaki (瀬戸焼) chawan was crafted by Katō Gotō (加藤五陶), an artisan belonging to one of Seto’s long-standing ceramic lineages. Seto ware, produced in Aichi Prefecture, is renowned for its continuous pottery heritage dating back over 1,000 years, and is the source of many foundational Japanese glaze styles, including Kiseto, Setoguro, and Shino.

Kiseto (黄瀬戸) is treasured for its gentle, amber-toned glaze inspired by Chinese celadon and early ash-glazed wares. Its quiet beauty and natural imperfections make it a favorite among tea practitioners and collectors of traditional Mino–Seto pottery.

The bowl showcases a soft ivory-hued glaze with natural crackle (kannyū 貫入), giving the surface a gentle, antique warmth. Delicate incised linework wraps around the body, forming an abstract geometric landscape reminiscent of mountain ridges or flowing patterns traditionally seen in Seto ware. A subtle splash of green overglaze adds a lively accent, offering contrast and a sense of depth to the otherwise calm palette.

The form is well-balanced and comfortable to hold, with a slightly rounded body and stable foot—ideal for everyday tea practice. The harmonious combination of incision, glaze texture, and earthy tones reflects the understated elegance that characterizes Seto ceramics.
