TC38 - Kyo-yaki Matcha Bowl by Ryūzan 隆山 京焼
Vintage item, never used. This elegant hirachawan (平茶碗), crafted in the refined tradition of Kyo-yaki / Kiyomizu-yaki, is the work of the potter Ryūzan(隆山). Characteristic of Kyoto ware, the bowl displays a graceful, shallow silhouette designed for ease of whisking and for appreciating matcha, especially in the warmer months when airy, open forms are preferred.
The surface is decorated in aka-e (赤絵), a classic overglaze technique that flourished in Kyoto, featuring warm vermilion outlines accented with delicate touches of green enamel and gold. The design combines blooming chrysanthemums—symbols of longevity and nobility—with flowing brushwork that lends a rhythmic, painterly elegance. Subtle craquelure (貫入) in the glaze enhances the bowl’s warmth and traditional character, giving it the soft, time-worn beauty admired in Kyoto ceramics.
The foot is cleanly finished, and the artist’s seal is impressed discreetly beneath, affirming the work of Ryūzan, a Kyoto potter known for refined forms and classical decorative motifs. Harmonious, light in hand, and visually expressive, this hirachawan embodies the grace and painterly sensibility for which Kyoto ware is celebrated.
