TC71 - Nara Bamboo Whisk Matcha 高山茶筌
Vintage item, never used. This is a traditional 八十本立 (80-prong) bamboo matcha whisk (高山茶筌) made in Takayama, Nara, a region renowned as the birthplace of Japan’s chasen craftsmanship.
Carefully hand-carved from a single piece of bamboo, this whisk features 80 fine tines, designed to create a smooth, creamy layer of foam while fully blending matcha powder without bitterness. The high number of prongs allows for excellent aeration, making it especially suitable for usucha (thin tea) preparation.
Takayama chasen have been produced for over 500 years, traditionally crafted by families who specialize exclusively in whisk making. The balanced shape, resilient bamboo, and precise cuts reflect generations of accumulated technique and tea culture.
Accompanying the whisk is a light green ceramic whisk holder (kusenaoshi), designed to maintain the chasen’s shape, allow it to dry properly, and extend its lifespan.
Both functional and beautiful, this chasen is an essential tool for the tea ceremony and a fine example of Japanese bamboo craftsmanship—ideal for daily matcha preparation or as an authentic addition to a tea lover’s collection.
