TC91 - Tamba-yaki Chawan Match Bowl 丹波焼
This Tamba-yaki (丹波焼) chawan embodies the quiet depth and rustic beauty of wabi-sabi, where imperfection, time, and natural process are not flaws, but essential elements of aesthetic appreciation.
The bowl presents a gently flared form with a slightly irregular rim, shaped with an unforced, organic hand. Its surface reveals layers of earthy tones—soft ash grey, muted green, and warm iron-brown—formed through natural kiln effects. Subtle horizontal throwing lines remain visible beneath the glaze, giving the piece a tactile rhythm and a sense of movement. Areas of natural ash deposit and fire-kissed markings create an almost landscape-like texture, reminiscent of weathered stone or autumn earth.
The interior shows a deeper pooling of glaze, with warm brown tones gathering along the inner rim, enhancing the contrast with the vibrant green of matcha. The foot is modest and unrefined, grounding the piece with a strong, stable presence typical of Tamba ware, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns.
A small hairline crack is present, a quiet trace of the bowl’s history. It does not affect usability and may be restored using traditional urushi (raw lacquer) repair, a practice that aligns beautifully with the philosophy of wabi-sabi—honoring rather than concealing the passage of time. The price reflects this condition.
