K10108 - Naruko by Setsuko Hayasaka
Vintage mini kokeshi made by Setsuko Hayasaka. She born on December 6, 1935, in Sanbongi Town, Miyagi Prefecture, Setsuko Hayasaka began her journey into kokeshi artistry after marrying Takashi Hayasaka, a woodturner, in 1955. Initially, Takashi focused on crafting the wooden forms, while Setsuko started painting the dolls around 1956, learning by observing others. By 1958, their collaborative kokeshi were available in their shop, with Setsuko handling the painting. In 1966, Takashi also began painting, encouraged by collectors. Their work gained recognition in 1967 when they were featured in the publication "Kokeshi Techo." The couple continued their craft, moving their shop in 1969 to a location near Naruko Elementary School. Their son, Toshinari Hayasaka, started training in woodturning in 1979, continuing the family tradition. Takashi passed away in March 2010.
Setsuko's kokeshi adhere to the Naruko style, often featuring chrysanthemum patterns on the body. She also painted motifs like maple leaves and irises. Her dolls are known for their straightforward brushwork and well-proportioned faces
