K18026 - Naruko by Yaichi Kumagai 熊谷弥市
A Naruko-style kokeshi by Yaichi Kumagai embodies the warmth and charm of traditional Japanese folk art. Featuring a wide, rounded head with a gently smiling expression and thick, black hair painted in Kumagai’s signature style, the doll carries a timeless presence. The tapered body is adorned with a beautifully hand-painted red chrysanthemum-like motif and soft green foliage, echoing natural beauty through understated symmetry and balance. The vivid floral design and subtle curvature of the form make this a classic and soothing example of Naruko craftsmanship.
Yaichi Kumagai (熊谷弥市, 1920–1997) born on January 2, 1920, in Furukawa City, Miyagi Prefecture, Yaichi Kumagai was the eldest son of Kumagai Heiichiro. After completing elementary school in 1933 and serving in the military through World War II, he returned home and began his artistic journey in 1948, initially focusing solely on painting kokeshi dolls.
In 1960, Kumagai took up woodturning under the instruction of respected kokeshi maker Onuma Chikara, marking the beginning of his full creative independence. From his workshop in Naruko-cho, he began producing his own kokeshi dolls, merging painting and carving in harmony.
In the mid-1960s, Kumagai not only created but also passed on his knowledge—mentoring emerging artists such as Endo Shoichi and Endo Toshio of Onikobe. His work is marked by clean, thoughtful lines and the restrained expressiveness characteristic of the Naruko style.
