This is a kokeshi doll by Ryoko Sato, a popular female artist of the Togatta style. The kokeshi doll with a gentle feminine touch of the Togatta style.
She born on September 5, 1939, as the second daughter of Ishikawa Komakura, a company employee in Sendai. After Yoshiko was born, the family moved to Manchuria, but returned to Sendai after the war, living in a dormitory for repatriates and working as a farmer. There was a woodcarver in front of her parents' house in Saiwai-cho, Sendai, and she would go there every day to get kindling for the bath they used at home, which led to her becoming the wife of the woodcarver, Sato Kazuo. The couple made kokeshi dolls for many years, but now in their mid-80s, they are on a break now.
