K20055 - Yamagata by Seitaro Kobayashi 小林誠太郎
A Yamagata-style kokeshi by Seitaro Kobayashi 小林誠太郎, representation of refined folk craftsmanship from the Tōhoku region. With a tall, elegant body and rounded head, the doll is painted in warm vermillion hues and floral motifs typical of the Yamagata tradition. The surface bears a mellow sheen and natural patina from age, giving the piece a quiet dignity. Her softly rendered facial expression with almond eyes and delicate brows reflects the calm, introspective aesthetic often found in Seitaro's later works.
The subtle restoration of traditional Kurayoshi-era designs is evident in the composition, echoing styles his father Seizo originally created. The harmonious balance of form, color, and expression makes this doll a refined addition to any kokeshi collection.
Seitaro Kobayashi was born on November 7, 1926, in Muikamachi, Yamagata City, as the eldest son of master craftsman Seizo Kobayashi. His younger brother, Chujiro Kobayashi, also became a well-known kokeshi artisan. Seitaro began training in woodturning and painting at a young age under his father’s guidance, and by the late 1930s, he was already creating kokeshi dolls of his own. He was first introduced as a kokeshi artist in the 1940 publication Ko, issue 3.
His career paused during WWII when he was conscripted in 1943, but he returned to his family workshop after the war and installed a powered potter’s wheel in 1947, marking a new phase of productivity and technical refinement. He passed away on April 4, 2005, at the age of 80, leaving behind a significant legacy in the world of traditional Yamagata kokeshi.
