FT57 - Vintage Folktoy kokeshi daikon

This vintage pair of omiyage kokeshi dolls is crafted in the unique shape of daikon radishes, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune. Their hand-painted faces feature delicate, expressive details, with small black eyes and red lips, evoking a traditional aesthetic. Their body has deep green color resembling daikon leaves, adding to their organic appeal. With a string, suggesting they can be used as decorative charms or ornaments.

A tradition that shows daikon has special signification is at Kyoto Temples like Senbon Shakadō (千本釈迦堂) and Rokuharamitsu-ji (六波羅蜜寺) hold “Daikon-Daki” (大根炊き) events in December. During these gatherings, large pots of daikon soup are prepared and served to visitors. Consuming the simmered radish is said to purify the body, ward off evil, and bring good health for the coming year. While this ritual focuses on health and spiritual cleansing, the hearty, nurturing qualities of daikon also subtly reinforce themes of abundance and well-being.

Root vegetables often have connotations of stability and long life, as they grow firmly in the earth. Daikon is sometimes seen as a sign of perseverance and resilience, qualities valued in Japanese culture.
