FT126 - Vintage Okiagari Kobōshi daruma doll

A vintage wooden Okiagari Kobōshi doll. 会津起姫 (Aizu Oki-Hime) is a traditional Okiagari Kobōshi (起き上がり小法師), crafted in Aizu, a region in Fukushima Prefecture known for its deep-rooted folk art traditions.

会津 (Aizu): The region where the doll originates.

起 (Oki): “To rise up” — as in the Okiagari Kobōshi tradition.

姫 (Hime): “Princess” or “young lady.”

Aizu Oki-Hime can be interpreted as “The Princess Who Always Stands Back Up” — a feminine version of the self-righting good-luck doll, infused with the same meaning of resilience and perseverance, but depicted with elegance and grace.

Shaped like a daruma doll, often with a weighted base so it returns to standing when tipped over. Painted in vibrant colors decorated with kimono-style motifs. The face and attire are styled to resemble a princess or noblewoman, with gentle expressions and traditional hairstyles.

Like all Okiagari dolls, the Oki-Hime embodies the idea of “fall down seven times, get up eight” (七転び八起き). The "Hime" element adds a layer of beauty and cultural refinement. These dolls are often purchased as New Year’s charms or given as gifts for girls, especially during Hinamatsuri (Doll Festival).

Size: 3 x 3 x 5cm
