SHP110 - Shikishi print - 7 Lucky gods 七福神
A vintage shikishi print card showcases the Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin, 七福神) aboard their mythical treasure ship, the Takarabune. With a whimsical and inviting style, the illustration captures a beloved New Year’s tradition in Japan, where the gods sail into port, bringing fortune, happiness, and blessings for the coming year.
Each deity is charmingly rendered with distinct characteristics: Ebisu casts his fishing line and proudly reels in a red sea bream (tai), a symbol of celebration and luck; Daikokuten holds his mallet of fortune; Hotei grins with his round belly and relaxed demeanor; Benzaiten exudes grace with a musical aura; while the others, Bishamonten, Fukurokuju, and Jurojin, sit peacefully aboard, each contributing their unique energies of prosperity, wisdom, and protection.
The ship itself sails smoothly across stylized waves, with a decorative phoenix head at the bow and a sail bearing the treasure symbol (宝). Above the boat, Japanese calligraphy offers an encouraging message:
"Ride out the waves with a smile, that’s the spirit." a poetic nod to resilience and optimism.
