A vintage shikishi print of the celebration of 米寿 (Beiju), a special Japanese longevity celebration that takes place when a person turns 88 years old. The character 米 (kome), meaning “rice,” when broken down into its kanji components (八十八), forms the number 88 — hence 米寿 marks the 88th year.

Reaching 88 is considered a major milestone in Japanese culture and is celebrated as a joyous occasion of long life and continued health.
