"Garyu Night Sakura" (臥龍夜桜) Under the Moon.
A vintage shikishi print features a tranquil and poetic depiction of Garyu Sakura (臥龍桜), or “Lying Dragon Cherry Tree,” viewed under the glow of the full moon. Rendered in delicate pastel tones, this work captures the ethereal atmosphere of springtime night sakura (夜桜) viewing, evoking both cultural reverence and quiet awe.
The flowing pink and white blossoms represent the famed Garyu Sakura, a beloved weeping cherry tree in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture. Its name "Garyu" (臥龍) translates to "Lying Dragon", referencing the tree's horizontal growth and majestic presence.
The backdrop is a soft gradation of misty greys and warm beige, crowned by a glowing full moon partially hidden behind the mountains—suggesting the passage of time and impermanence, central themes in Japanese aesthetics and the appreciation of sakura.
The Shikishi card is a traditional Japanese art medium, historically used for the elegant display of poetry, calligraphy, and paintings. In modern times, Shikishi cards are not only used for formal art forms but also as souvenirs, gifts, and autographs. They have become a popular medium for well-wishes or commemorations, given their decorative quality.
