This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) comes from Hakata (博多), the historic merchant district of Fukuoka in northern Kyūshū, long celebrated for its festivals, craftsmanship, and lively port culture.

Crafted from richly grained wood and finished with a red-and-white braided cord and protective bell, the front is boldly inscribed with the large calligraphy 博多. Beside it stands a spirited samurai figure holding a red fan, and below, a dynamic scene of a towering festival float surrounded by celebrants. The imagery evokes the energy of the famous Hakata Gion Yamakasa, one of Japan’s most thrilling summer festivals, known for its elaborately decorated floats and teams of men racing through the streets in traditional attire.

Along the right side is a playful sake proverb written in brush script, humorously suggesting moderation in drinking—an affectionate nod to Hakata’s renowned food culture and convivial atmosphere. The back of the tegata continues with bold calligraphy and blessings such as 交通安全 (traffic safety) and 家内安全 (household safety), reinforcing its function as a charm for protection and good fortune during travel.

Historically, a tsuko-tegata was a travel permit required during the Edo period, allowing passage between domains. Today, it survives as a nostalgic souvenir symbolizing safe journeys and cherished travel memories. This Hakata example beautifully combines local festival pride, merchant-town spirit, and traditional protective symbolism into one expressive keepsake.
