VTT138 - Tsuko-Tegata from Suizen-ji 水前寺公園
This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) comes from Suizenji Jōjuen (水前寺公園) in Kumamoto, one of Japan’s most celebrated Edo-period strolling gardens. Known for its miniature landscapes representing the famous stations of the Tōkaidō road and for its refined natural scenery, Suizenji Garden has long been a popular destination for visitors seeking tranquility and classical Japanese aesthetics.
The wooden plaque follows the historic shape of Edo-period travel passes and is inscribed with bold calligraphy reading 通行手形, evoking the official permits once required to travel between domains during the Edo era. Additional inscriptions traditionally associated with such charms express wishes for 交通安全 (traffic safety) and protection during journeys, reinforcing its role as a travel amulet.
This example from Suizenji Park serves both as a symbolic charm for safe travels and a keepsake recalling the beauty of Kumamoto’s historic garden and its elegant representation of Japan’s traditional landscapes.
