VTT159 - Tsuko-Tegata from Hirayu Onsen 平湯温泉
This traditional Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden plaque is a souvenir charm from Hirayu Onsen (平湯温泉), a historic hot spring town nestled in the Northern Japan Alps of Gifu Prefecture.
Crafted from richly grained wood in the classic pentagonal shape, the front features bold calligraphy reading 平湯温泉, accompanied by smaller inscriptions and a stamped seal that evoke the authority and nostalgia of Edo-period travel permits. The reverse is illustrated with a simple map of the surrounding region, highlighting nearby landmarks such as Mount Norikura (乗鞍岳) and the network of mountain routes that connect this alpine area.
A small metal bell is attached by a traditional red-and-white braided cord, producing a soft, gentle chime when moved—believed to ward off misfortune and protect the traveler on their journey. The understated design, combined with the natural wood texture, reflects the rustic atmosphere of this long-established onsen destination.
Blending regional identity with symbolic protection, this tsuko-tegata serves as both a meaningful keepsake of Hirayu Onsen and a talisman for safe travels through Japan’s mountainous landscapes.
