VTT167 - Tsuko-Tegata from Arima Onsen 有馬温泉

This traditional Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden plaque is a commemorative travel talisman from Arima Onsen (有馬温泉), one of Japan’s oldest and most renowned hot spring resorts.

Crafted from natural wood with a soft, warm patina, the plaque features finely engraved motifs rather than bold ink calligraphy, giving it a refined and understated aesthetic. At the center is the emblem of 寛永通宝 (Kan’ei Tsūhō)—the iconic Edo-period coin—symbolizing prosperity, good fortune, and safe passage. Surrounding inscriptions include 交通安全 (traffic safety) and 招福厄除 (inviting good fortune and warding off misfortune), reinforcing its protective purpose.

The reverse is marked with 通行手形, evoking the official travel permits once required during the Edo period, linking the piece to Japan’s historical culture of regulated journeys. The engraved style lends a quiet elegance, blending seamlessly with the natural grain of the wood.

Suspended from a simple braided cord in earthy tones and accented with a small bell, the tegata emits a gentle chime believed to ward off evil spirits and ensure safe travels.

Combining the symbolism of ancient currency with the heritage of Arima Onsen, this tsuko-tegata serves as both a meaningful souvenir and a timeless charm for protection, prosperity, and well-being.
