VTT177 - Tsuko-Tegata from Chūgū Onsen 中宮温泉
This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) is a vintage wooden travel plaque from Chūgū Onsen (中宮温泉), a secluded hot spring area nestled in the mountains of Ishikawa Prefecture, known for its pristine nature and tranquil atmosphere.
The front features bold calligraphy alongside a delicate illustration of monkeys—an image closely associated with the forests around Chūgū, where wild macaques are often seen. Accompanying text evokes the purity of the landscape, referencing the serene beauty of the Hakusan Super Forest Road (白山スーパー林道) and the unspoiled mountain environment.
The reverse bears the classic 通行手形 inscription, recalling the official travel passes of the Edo period, while vermilion seal stamps add an authentic, time-honored touch. A red-and-white braided cord—symbolizing protection and good fortune—is attached, along with a small bell whose gentle chime is traditionally believed to ward off misfortune and ensure safe travels.
Blending natural scenery, hot spring culture, and historical symbolism, this tsuko-tegata from Chūgū Onsen is both a charming souvenir and a meaningful talisman of safe passage—perfect for collectors or lovers of Japan’s hidden mountain retreats.
