TB04 - Wabi-Sabi Teacup of Banko-Yaki Iron Glaze

TB04 - Wabi-Sabi Teacup of Banko-Yaki Iron Glaze

Wabi-Sabi Ceramic Teacup of Banko-Yaki Iron Glaze with Natural Flowing Red. Rooted in the timeless philosophy of wabi-sabi, this handcrafted ceramic cup celebrates the quiet elegance of imperfection and the beauty found in simplicity. Made in the Banko-yaki tradition, its surface is coated with a deep, iron glaze, textured like tree bark—earthy, unrefined, and profoundly tactile. The irregular, flowing red glaze inside the cup feels spontaneous and free, echoing the unpredictable rhythms of nature.

Banko-yaki (also spelled Banko ware) is a traditional Japanese pottery style originating from Yokkaichi, in Mie Prefecture, with a history dating back to the mid-Edo period (around 1736–1740). The term "Banko" means "eternity" or "everlasting," reflecting the hope that the wares would be used and appreciated for generations.

Banko-yaki often uses iron-rich clay, giving pieces a distinctive earthy tone and excellent heat resistance. Many items feature natural ash or iron glazes, which develop unique flows, drips, and textures during high-temperature firing.

Supported by three understated feet, the form gently lifts from the surface, embodying balance without symmetry. No two cups are ever the same, each bearing the marks of fire, hand, and chance.
