CB099 - Dorei Clay Bell Zodiac Monkey
This charming dorei (土鈴) clay bell takes the form of a monkey (saru), a beloved and auspicious animal in Japanese folklore. With its wide, expressive eyes and slightly mischievous grin, the figure exudes a playful yet protective presence. The monkey wears a traditional black Eboshi-style hat and a beautifully painted vest adorned with a black-and-white geometric pattern and vibrant floral motifs, adding a refined touch to its festive appearance.
In its front paws, the monkey holds a golden bell — a symbol of good fortune. It is also considered a guardian against misfortune and evil spirits, this bell is rich in protective symbolism.
Finished with a red braided cord for hanging and ringing, this handcrafted clay bell would have likely been sold as an engimono — a lucky charm or souvenir during New Year's or at a shrine. Both decorative and spiritually meaningful, it embodies Japan's deep appreciation for animals as messengers of the divine and protectors of households.
