Vintage item, never used. This Tsugaru-nuri geta (津軽塗り下駄) is a beautiful unused pair of traditional Japanese wooden sandals, finished with the richly layered lacquer technique of Tsugaru-nuri from Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture.

The original leaflet is included and explains the special character of Tsugaru lacquerware. According to the leaflet, Tsugaru-nuri is created through a highly detailed process, from the preparation of the base to the final polishing, requiring around 40 to 50 individual steps and taking approximately two months to complete. It also describes several decorative techniques used in Tsugaru-nuri, such as kara-nuri and other patterned lacquer styles, where multiple layers of colored lacquer are applied, dried, polished, and refined until the distinctive depth and texture appear.

The geta feature a glossy black lacquer base with beautiful speckled tones of deep red, green, and gold, giving the surface a rich stone-like pattern unique to Tsugaru-nuri. The vivid red fabric straps with pale grey lining create a refined contrast against the dark lacquer, making the pair both elegant and eye-catching.

The leaflet also identifies the piece as being from Tanakaya (田中屋), a shop in Hirosaki, Aomori, an area closely associated with Tsugaru lacquer craftsmanship. This adds lovely provenance to the item and makes it especially appealing for collectors of Japanese regional crafts.

They can be worn with kimono or yukata, but they are also beautiful as a display item for lovers of Japanese lacquerware, vintage fashion, and traditional folk craftsmanship. A refined and well-preserved example of Tsugaru-nuri artistry, combining practical form with the quiet elegance of handmade Japanese lacquer.
