This vintage papier-mâché rabbit (hariko usagi) was handcrafted by the Tamashima Daruma Factory 岡山県・玉島だるま製造所 in the Tamashima district of Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture. Known primarily for its traditional daruma and hariko tora (papier-mâché tigers), this small local workshop has been producing folk crafts since shortly after the end of World War II.
This particular rabbit is sculpted in a simple, rounded form with soft curves and a gentle presence. It is painted in a delicate pale pink, with bright red eyes and accents on the ears that give it a warm, endearing expression. Like many Japanese folk crafts, its charm lies in its imperfections and handmade character, each figure carries a slightly different personality.
The rabbit is a beloved symbol in Japanese culture, often associated with luck, cleverness, and the moon. In the zodiac, it is known for its calm, kind, and peace-loving nature. This figurine makes a delightful seasonal ornament, a thoughtful gift, or a meaningful piece for anyone born in the Year of the Rabbit. A gentle and nostalgic piece of Okayama's living folk tradition.
