A vintage hand-carved wooden folk toy (郷土玩具, kyōdo gangu) depicting the powerful and loyal Tosa Inu (土佐犬) — a breed native to Kōchi Prefecture (formerly Tosa Province) in Japan. Known for its strength and courage, the Tosa Inu is often associated with traditional dog wrestling and samurai spirit.

Crafted in the 旨し (Umashi) style, this kibori (wood-carved) figure features bold, faceted carving lines and a natural wood finish, emphasizing the raw beauty of the material. A braided white rope encircles its body, echoing the shimenawa used in Shinto rituals, symbolizing purity and protection.

Tosa Inu: A symbol of bravery, protection, and regional pride, especially in Kōchi Prefecture. The Tosa Inu was historically bred for dog fighting, but unlike Western styles, Japanese dog fighting emphasized quiet strength, composure, and endurance. Tosa came to symbolize a calm but powerful spirit, much like the samurai code of conduct (bushidō) — power held with dignity and restraint. Like many dog breeds in Japanese folklore, the Tosa Inu is associated with loyalty and protection. It known for being stoic, calm, and gentle — unless provoked.

This is a rustic and expressive style of folk doll carving, emphasizing simplicity and character over polish. The Shimenawa-style Rope: Invokes spiritual protection and ceremonial significance, the dog's role as a guardian or sacred figure.

Size: 9 x 4 x 6cm
