FT317 - Omiyage Kokeshi doll from Kanekawa 金川
This omiyage kokeshi dolls comes from 金川 (Kanekawa), a small historic area located in what is now part of Okayama City in Okayama Prefecture, western Japan. Once the site of Kanekawa Castle and a thriving castle town, the region is rich in cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship. Today, it is known for preserving elements of its Edo-period charm through local festivals, folk art, and artisan-made souvenirs.
The set features two delightful kokeshi figures. The larger kokeshi showcases Kintarō, the legendary child hero known for his superhuman strength and love for nature. Beside him, the smaller kokeshi is painted with a bear, referencing the folklore in which Kintarō wrestles and befriends animals of the mountains. Together, they represent themes of bravery, innocence, and harmony with nature.
Each doll is adorned with traditional cords and painted with care, mounted on a rustic wooden base. As a folk craft from Kanekawa, this piece beautifully blends regional history with the warmth of handmade artistry — making it a unique and meaningful addition to any kokeshi or Japanese culture collection.
