This finely crafted Kyō Ningyō 京人形 miniature represents Naginata-hoko 長刀鉾, the most prominent float of the famous Gion Festival 祇園祭 held annually in Kyoto. The piece was made by Kotoya Chūbei 小刀屋忠兵衛, an artisan known for producing detailed Kyoto folk dolls and miniature festival floats that capture the elegance of traditional celebrations.

The miniature carefully recreates the structure of the Naginata-hoko, which leads the grand Yamaboko Junko procession each July during the Gion Festival. This float is distinguished by the long curved naginata (halberd blade) mounted atop its tall central pole. Historically, the blade was believed to ward off evil spirits and protect the procession from misfortune, giving the float an important ceremonial role.

The model captures many characteristic elements of the real float: the wheeled base, decorative panels, roofed structure, and the tall pole rising dramatically above the cart. The delicate combination of painted wood, textile details, and fine assembly reflects the refined craftsmanship associated with Kyoto folk arts.

Miniature festival floats like this were often made as Kyoto souvenirs and decorative keepsakes, allowing people to preserve the atmosphere of the historic festival in their homes. This miniature Naginata-hoko beautifully embodies both the festive spirit of the Gion Matsuri, which dates back over a thousand years, and the delicate artistry of traditional Kyō Ningyō craftsmanship.
