This omiyage doll from Kurumayama Kōgen (車山高原) is a charming example of rustic Japanese folk creativity, known as のんも (Nonmo) a traditional protective figure believed to ward off evil (魔除け置物).

Made from natural materials such as birch bark, wood, and found organic elements, the piece features a pair of whimsical human-like figures mounted on a wooden base. Their expressive faces—formed with simple cut and applied details—carry a playful yet slightly mysterious presence, characteristic of folk talismans designed to both amuse and protect. One figure wears a small “hat” made from layered natural pieces, while the other is adorned with a fabric headband, adding individuality and personality to each character.

The use of raw bark, knots, and irregular textures highlights the deep connection to nature found in regional crafts from mountainous areas like Kurumayama Highlands in Nagano. These materials are not only aesthetic but symbolic, embodying natural spirits and protective energy. The red lips and wide eyes further enhance their role as guardians, watching over the home and warding off misfortune.

As a souvenir, this piece reflects the local culture and handmade traditions of the area, where such figures are often created as good-luck charms. Today, it stands as a delightful decorative object—full of character, humor, and spiritual meaning—perfect for collectors of Japanese folk art or those drawn to one-of-a-kind handmade items with a story.
