FT439 - Omiyage Kokeshi from Shirahama 白浜
This omiyage kokeshi craft of Kai Ningyō (貝人形) comes from Shirahama (白浜), a coastal region in Wakayama Prefecture renowned for its beautiful beaches and long tradition of Kai crafts.
The set features three miniature figures arranged on a shared wooden base, each with a softly carved wooden head and expressive hand-painted faces. This fusion of materials reflects Shirahama’s seaside culture, where Kai have long been used in decorative folk art.
Each figure is adorned in a distinct color palette—silver, red, and muted brown—creating a harmonious yet lively trio. Delicate bows accent the front, while the tufted black hair tied at the top adds a playful, endearing touch.
Kai ningyō are cherished as souvenirs from coastal regions, symbolizing purity, natural beauty, and a connection to the sea. In Shirahama, such crafts are especially popular, inspired by the abundance of shells and the area’s long-standing reputation as a resort destination.
Compact and beautifully balanced, this set makes a charming display piece—capturing both the gentle elegance of traditional Japanese folk art and the breezy, nostalgic spirit of Japan’s seaside culture.
