FT618 - Hakata Doll Ōgi Ma 扇舞 博多人形
A charming vintage Japanese Hakata Doll (博多人形) titled 扇舞 (Ōgi Mai), meaning Fan Dance, depicting a graceful young woman performing a traditional Japanese dance with a folding fan.
The doll features a delicate, youthful face with expressive eyes, softly blushed cheeks, and long, flowing white hair adorned with small pink ornaments. She wears an elegant white kimono decorated with delicate pink blossoms and slender branches, complemented by soft coral-pink edging and a touch of green at the sleeve.
Held gracefully in front of her is a golden folding fan decorated with colourful motifs, capturing the refined gestures and gentle movement of traditional Japanese fan dancing.
Hakata dolls (博多人形) are a celebrated form of Japanese traditional craftsmanship originating from Fukuoka, Kyushu. Traditionally made from unglazed clay and carefully hand-painted, these figurines are admired for their delicate facial expressions, elegant forms, and detailed representations of Japanese culture, particularly beautiful women (bijin), theatrical performers, and historical characters.
The title Ōgi Mai (扇舞) refers to a traditional fan dance, in which the folding fan becomes an expressive extension of the dancer's movements, symbolising grace, beauty, and artistic refinement.
The figurine comes with a black display base and its original cardboard storage box, which bears a label identifying the piece as 扇舞.
A beautiful example of Japanese decorative folk art, ideal for collectors of Hakata dolls, traditional Japanese dance memorabilia, and vintage Japanese craftsmanship.
