FT625 - Seven Lucky Gods Shichifukujin 七福神
A charming vintage Shichifukujin (七福神) decorative wall plaque from Japan's Shōwa period, featuring the Seven Lucky Gods of Japanese folklore, traditionally associated with happiness, prosperity, good fortune, and longevity.
This delightful piece features seven colourful, three-dimensional miniature faces arranged vertically on a natural wooden board. Each face is individually sculpted and painted with expressive features, cheerful smiles, and distinctive traditional headwear. Small Japanese labels accompany each figure, identifying the seven deities.
The Seven Lucky Gods (七福神) are among the most beloved figures in Japanese folk beliefs:
Fukurokuju (福禄寿) – God of happiness, wealth, and longevity.
Bishamonten (毘沙門天) – God of protection, courage, and good fortune.
Ebisu (恵比寿) – God of fishermen, commerce, and prosperity.
Benzaiten (弁財天) – Goddess of music, arts, wisdom, and eloquence.
Hotei (布袋) – God of happiness, generosity, and contentment.
Daikokuten (大黒天) – God of wealth, agriculture, and abundance.
Jurōjin (寿老人) – God of longevity and wisdom.
During the Shōwa era (1926–1989), decorative representations of the Seven Lucky Gods were popular household ornaments and souvenirs, believed to invite blessings and positive fortune into the home.
