K10254 - Omiyage Kokeshi from Arima 有馬
This charming vintage omiyage kokeshi is a delightful souvenir from Arima (有馬), one of Japan's oldest and most celebrated hot spring towns. This unique souvenir draws inspiration from Arima Brushes (有馬筆 / Arima Fude)—the historic craft for which the town has been famous for more than four centuries.
The doll features a smiling face with a distinctive pointed hairstyle, while the circular base is beautifully decorated with a nostalgic ink-style landscape depicting Nara's famous deer, pine trees, and gentle countryside. The artwork evokes the peaceful atmosphere surrounding Nara Park, where sacred deer have freely roamed for centuries as revered messengers of the Kasuga deity.
Although purchased as a souvenir in Arima Onsen, the piece reflects a common tradition among Showa-era Japanese souvenir makers, who often combined nearby regional attractions into a single keepsake for travelers touring the Kansai area. Visitors frequently journeyed between Arima, Kobe, Kyoto, and Nara, making this an especially meaningful reminder of their travels.
Arima Onsen itself boasts a history of over 1,300 years and is counted among Japan's Three Ancient Hot Springs (日本三古湯). Famous for its mineral-rich Kin-no-Yu (Golden Spring) and Gin-no-Yu (Silver Spring) waters, the town has long been a destination for rest, healing, and cultural exploration.
