A traditional Yajirō-style kokeshi crafted by Keimi Niiyama (新山慶美, 1925–2003), a master artisan from Shiroishi in Miyagi Prefecture. This kokeshi is a fine representation of the classic Yajirō aesthetic, characterized by its clean lines, minimalistic beauty, and symmetrical design.
The doll features a rounded head with finely painted facial features: half-moon-shaped eyes, a small red mouth, and bold black side hair panels that frame the face. A red headband motif encircles the crown, a common decorative element in the Yajirō style.
The cylindrical body displays bold horizontal red bands around the upper and midsection, and vertical teardrop or flame-shaped elements near the base—hallmarks of the Yajirō style. The red pigment has softened slightly over time, giving it a gentle patina that adds to its nostalgic charm.
Keimi Niiyama was an important figure in the Yajirō kokeshi lineage. He studied under Niiyama Kichitarō (his father) and was known for producing robust, warm-toned kokeshi that emphasized strong traditional brushwork with subtle personality. His works are admired for their quiet elegance and adherence to classic proportions.
