A vintage Donko-style Kokeshi doll (どんここけし) Donko Kokeshi are a subcategory of Naruko-kei (鳴子系) Kokeshi, known for their rounded heads and stout, gourd-like bodies. Originating from the Tōhoku region, particularly in Miyagi Prefecture. Donko Kokeshi are often distinguished by their charming expressions and rustic character.
In Japan, the gourd known as 瓢箪 (hyōtan) or ひょうたん, is a powerful and auspicious symbol with deep cultural, spiritual, and artistic significance. The gourd is traditionally seen as a talisman to ward off evil spirits and misfortune. Its natural shape and hollow body were believed to trap bad spirits inside.
This particular doll features a deep red body adorned with the kanji 寿 (kotobuki), meaning “longevity” or “congratulations,” traditionally used to convey good fortune and celebratory wishes. The rounded head is painted with a soft, gentle face and a floral motif on top. The body also includes hand-painted calligraphy and possibly a scenic motif, now gracefully worn with age, adding to its nostalgic charm.
