This Yajirō-style kokeshi was crafted by Minoru Niyama (新山実, 1956–), a fourth-generation artisan rooted deeply in the tradition of Yajirō kokeshi. Born on March 20, 1956, in Shiroishi, Miyagi Prefecture, Minoru is the eldest son of master craftsman Niyama Manabu and carries on the legacy passed down from his great-grandfather, who followed the revered Eigorō lineage.

This particular kokeshi stands out with a distinct conical (kasa) atop its head, a playful element that reflects Minoru’s whimsical creativity. The body is finished with smooth curves and rhythmic red rings, emphasizing the natural grain of the wood and his expert lathe work. The doll’s calm, slightly mischievous expression is delicately hand-painted, staying true to the classical Yajirō features while inviting warmth and humor.

Having started spinning the potter’s wheel as early as 1971, Minoru began formal training under his father in 1974 after high school. While he mastered traditional kokeshi forms, his artistic curiosity led him to study Edo-style spinning tops (koma) under Hiroi Michiaki. This influence is evident in his frequent crossover between folk toys and kokeshi, often designing pieces that engage and delight children.
