This is a traditional Naruko-style kokeshi crafted by Yasuo Yusa (遊佐泰雄, 1942–2015), a respected artisan from Naruko Onsen in Miyagi Prefecture. Born into a civil servant family, Yusa began his journey into kokeshi-making in 1958 under the apprenticeship of renowned master Sakurai Shoji. Drawing from the stylistic legacy of Sakurai Ko, Yusa developed a personal interpretation of the Naruko tradition, which is evident in the charming character and lively brushwork of his dolls.
This particular piece displays the hallmark features of Naruko kokeshi: a rounded head with a gentle, cheerful expression and softly blushed cheeks, paired with a cylindrical body adorned with vibrant floral motifs. The design is rendered in deep red and subtle green, with a smooth gradient of turning lines near the base and shoulder, adding to its warmth and traditional feel.
