Yusa Fukuju 遊佐福寿 born in Naruko Onsen, Yusa Fukuju began his kokeshi-making journey in 1953 as a student of Satō Tatsuo (佐藤達雄), a prominent figure in the Naruko tradition. He developed a style that stayed true to classical Naruko forms while expressing a refined sensitivity through his brushwork and carving. His work is known for its well-proportioned figures, soft facial expressions, and vibrant but traditional floral motifs. Fukuju was active for nearly five decades and earned respect among collectors and peers alike. His kokeshi are often regarded as representative of the postwar Naruko aesthetic—faithful to its roots yet marked with individual warmth and quiet mastery.
