K25072 - Traditional Yajirō by Kunio Hachihoya 八甫谷邦夫
This traditional Yajirō-style kokeshi was handcrafted by Kunio Hachihoya (八甫谷邦夫), a skilled artisan from the well-known Yajirō lineage of kokeshi making. Signed with his characteristic mark 甫作 (Hosa-ku), this doll is a fine example of the classic Yajirō aesthetic, both bold and expressive, yet rooted in refined simplicity.
The doll features a distinctive head shape with a slightly rounded crown and a painted hairstyle in the Yajirō tradition: sharply defined bangs, black side tufts, and a central topknot motif. The face is delicately rendered, with arched eyebrows, gently closed eyes, and a softly smiling expression, giving the doll a calm and affectionate personality.
The body is gracefully turned and painted with chrysanthemum-like floral motifs in vivid red, a common design element in Yajirō kokeshi. The flowers are arranged rhythmically around both the upper and lower portions of the body, creating visual balance and a sense of movement. Thin red bands encircle the base and collar, further enhancing the structure’s elegant proportions.
Kunio Hachihoya, part of a distinguished family of woodworkers in the Yajirō area (Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture), is known for faithfully upholding the regional tradition while leaving his subtle mark in the details of expression and form. His signature "甫" not only reflects his given name but also signifies his individual contribution to the legacy of handmade kokeshi.
