This is a traditional Togatta-style kokeshi crafted by Mitsuhiro Asakura (朝倉光洋, 1947–2017), a dedicated artisan from Sendai City in Miyagi Prefecture. Born into a family of woodworkers, Asakura initially pursued a career as a marine engineer before returning to his roots following the passing of his father. Around 1976, he began training in woodcarving under his father’s cousin, master craftsman Sato Teruo, and later received guidance in painting from his mother, Kinu.

This kokeshi is a fine example of the Togatta tradition, characterized by a tall, slender body and a large, round head. The doll features bold red and black brushwork forming floral motifs, along with a symmetrical hairstyle and delicately rendered facial expression. The vibrant, layered chrysanthemum design on the body is a hallmark of the region, symbolizing seasonal beauty and traditional elegance.

In 2008, Mitsuhiro Asakura was officially recognized as a Traditional Japanese Craftsman. His legacy includes international demonstrations and deep community engagement, notably his “Asakura Kokeshi Cave” workshop, where he preserved and passed on the spirit of Togatta craftsmanship.
