This elegant Hijiori kokeshi by 鈴木征一 (Seiichi Suzuki, born 1944) beautifully captures the refined simplicity and poetic charm of the Hijiori tradition, enhanced by a delicate nadeshiko (wild pink) floral motif.

The doll features a gracefully proportioned cylindrical body and softly rounded head, characteristic of Hijiori kokeshi. The face is calm and expressive, with gently arched brows, fine eyes, and a small, composed mouth that conveys a quiet warmth. The hairstyle is neatly rendered with black side locks and short bangs, framed by a striking red chrysanthemum-like head decoration that adds a subtle sense of festivity.

The body is adorned with finely painted nadeshiko flowers, a motif associated with elegance, femininity, and traditional Japanese aesthetics. The blossoms are rendered in vivid red with soft, feathery brushstrokes, complemented by light green stems that flow naturally along the wood grain. The composition feels airy and organic, allowing the natural beauty of the wood to remain visible beneath the design. Red banding at the neck and base provides a harmonious frame, typical of the Hijiori style.

Seiichi Suzuki, originally from Tokyo, moved to Hijiori Onsen as a child and became one of the most important modern bearers of its kokeshi tradition. Training under Koji Okuyama beginning in 1972, he established his own workshop in 1977 and has since dedicated his career to preserving and evolving the Yamagata/Hijiori lineage. As the last active kokeshi artisan in Hijiori Onsen, his work holds particular cultural significance. His craftsmanship has been widely recognized, including receiving the Top Prize at the National Kokeshi Competition in Shiraishi (2019).
