This traditional Naruko kokeshi was created by Toshio Sato 佐藤俊夫(1939-), a craftsman deeply connected to the Naruko kokeshi tradition of Miyagi Prefecture. The doll displays the elegant balance and refined brushwork characteristic of classic Naruko-style craftsmanship.

The kokeshi features a rounded head with a gentle smiling expression, softly arched eyes, delicate red lips, and finely painted black hair framed by vivid floral motifs around the crown. The expression conveys warmth and serenity, while the slightly aged patina of the wood gives the piece a nostalgic charm and sense of history.

Its cylindrical body is richly decorated with bold red chrysanthemum-like flowers and dark leaves, painted in a flowing symmetrical arrangement. The vibrant floral design contrasts beautifully with the natural wood grain, while the fine red and black rokuro lines around the neck and base emphasize the elegant proportions typical of Naruko kokeshi. The hand-painted motifs retain the lively brush energy that makes each traditional kokeshi unique.

Toshio Sato was born in 1939 in Motoyoshi, present-day Minamisanriku Town in Miyagi Prefecture, as the son of a fisherman. In 1959, he moved to Naruko to study woodworking under the respected craftsman Riki Onuma, alongside fellow apprentices Kesaaki Koyama and Tomio Katakura. He began producing kokeshi dolls in 1967 and established his own independent workshop in Kami-Naruko in 1973.

This piece reflects the enduring beauty of the Naruko tradition — simple yet expressive, refined yet deeply handmade. A charming vintage kokeshi that embodies the warmth, skill, and quiet elegance of one of Japan’s most beloved folk art traditions.
