A Sōsaku Kokeshi entitled Hōshun, created by Ueda Izumi (植田和泉). With its sculptural silhouette, subdued natural tones and deeply contemplative expression, this piece embodies the poetic modernism that characterizes Japan’s postwar creative kokeshi movement.
The most striking feature is the doll’s large, carefully carved bobbed hairstyle, which forms an architectural frame around the face. Fine vertical incisions suggest individual strands of hair, while the dark brown staining allows the grain of the wood to remain visible beneath the surface. Beneath this substantial coiffure appears a remarkably simple face: two delicate closed eyes and almost no other detail. This extreme restraint gives the figure a peaceful, inward-looking presence.
Rather than painting a kimono onto the body, Ueda suggests the garment through carved geometric lines, forming overlapping lapels across the chest. Small, softly stained floral motifs provide the only decoration, evoking the first blossoms emerging with the arrival of spring. The natural wood itself becomes an essential element of the composition, with its grain, knots and tonal variations contributing to the rustic beauty of the figure.
The title Hōshun evokes the freshness and renewal associated with spring. This seasonal imagery is expressed not through elaborate decoration but through simplicity: a quiet figure, delicate blossoms and the warmth of natural wood. The result is a work that feels both distinctly Japanese and strikingly modern.
