K30006 - Tsugaru kokeshi by Tatsuo Hasegawa 長谷川辰雄

This kokeshi doll is from 1960s by Tatsuo Hasegawa (1905–1985), a master kokeshi artisan. Originating from the Tsugaru region of Aomori Prefecture, Tsugaru kokeshi are distinct from other traditional kokeshi due to their bold, symmetrical patterns and refined painting techniques. The doll’s head is large and rounded, with neatly painted short black hair and fine brushwork. The expressive almond-shaped eyes gaze forward, framed by delicate eyebrows and subtle red cheeks, giving the doll a serene yet engaging expression. The cylindrical form is decorated with “Tebana” (hand-flower) motifs, a signature design of Tsugaru kokeshi. These patterns, painted in red and green, resemble stylized chrysanthemums creating a rhythmic, symmetrical design. The red and multicolored bands around the neck and base add visual contrast, reinforcing the doll’s structured and elegant composition. Size: 30cm tall
