A vintage Yajirō-style kokeshi doll crafted by the renowned artisan Hisashi Niyama (1915–1984). The doll showcases the hallmark traits of the Yajirō lineage: a cylindrical body with vertical red and purple stripes, and a rounded head with a vividly painted floral pattern resembling a chrysanthemum. The doll’s face is delicately painted with narrow eyes, arched eyebrows, and a small red mouth, exuding a serene and elegant expression. The craftsmanship reflects Niyama’s refined skill, maintaining symmetry and a distinct visual warmth emblematic of his work.
Hisashi Niyama (新山久志, 1915–1984) was a distinguished kokeshi craftsman from Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture, and is particularly known for his work in the Yajirō style. He was the eldest son of master Sanroku Niyama, from whom he learned the art of kokeshi-making. Hisashi's works are recognized for their disciplined form, clear facial expressions, and strong use of traditional patterns and vivid colors. He was active mainly during the mid-20th century and passed down his legacy through both his work and influence on other artisans within the Yajirō tradition.
