A vintage Togatta-kei kokeshi (遠刈田系こけし) created by Tomio Sato (佐藤富雄, 1928–2016), an artisan born into one of the woodworking families of Togatta Onsen in Miyagi Prefecture.
This elegant kokeshi displays the distinctive proportions and decoration associated with the Togatta tradition. The tall, slender cylindrical body supports a large rounded head, creating the strong yet graceful silhouette characteristic of the school. Her face is particularly expressive, with fine arched eyebrows, narrow smiling eyes and a tiny red mouth. Bold black side hair frames the face, while the crown is decorated with radiating red brushwork, giving the doll a striking appearance from every angle.
Tomio Sato was born on March 19, 1928, in Togatta Shinchi, the eldest son of kokeshi craftsman Bunsuke Sato (佐藤文助) and Yoshino Sato. After finishing elementary school in 1941, he began learning woodworking under his father, initially producing objects such as spinning tops before progressing to kokeshi.
His first kokeshi was reportedly a small netsuke-sized doll commissioned by the noted kokeshi researcher and collector Bontaro Suzuki (鈴木鼓堂 / 鈴木鼓太郎). His work was interrupted during the final years of World War II when he worked at a munitions factory in Funaoka. After the war, he returned to Togatta Onsen and resumed woodworking alongside his father and younger brother.
As both a member and transmitter of the Togatta woodworking lineage, Tomio Sato represents the continuity of one of Miyagi Prefecture's historic kokeshi traditions. This doll is a lovely example of his work, combining the bold graphic decoration of Togatta kokeshi with a remarkably gentle and cheerful expression.
