Vintage Shikishi “Yume wa dekkaku, ne wa fukaku” (夢はでっかく、根は深く) is one of the famous sayings of the Japanese poet Mitsuo Aida. It means “Dream big, root deep.”

This phrase encourages people to pursue great dreams while remaining grounded in reality, continuously building their strength to turn those dreams into reality.

Be brave enough to set ambitious goals and don’t be afraid to aim high. Dreams can drive us forward and give meaning to our lives. Like a tree that stands firm against wind and rain only when its roots are deep, we must work hard, accumulate experience, and cultivate inner strength to support the realization of our dreams.

Mitsuo Aida’s poetry is simple and unpretentious, yet deeply philosophical. His works often use warm and gentle expressions to encourage people to face life’s challenges.
