This shikishi artwork by Masumi Kobayashi (小林真澄) depicts a pair of Hina Ningyō (雛人形)—the traditional male and female dolls displayed during Hinamatsuri, Japan’s Girls’ Day celebration. Rendered in the delicate chigiri-e collage style, the dolls are crafted from beautifully textured papers that mimic the richness of brocade garments while maintaining a soft, handmade charm.

Masumi Kobayashi work includes various crafts, such as paper art and Japanese dolls. The Japanese doll card shown in the image bears her brand name "Kyo." Her work is popular both in Japan and abroad, and is frequently exhibited and sold in shops and exhibitions.

Standing side by side on a patterned base, the Odairi-sama (Emperor) and Ohina-sama (Empress) appear in simplified, modern forms while still honoring classical court attire. Their robes feature warm tones of gold, grey, and red, creating a harmonious balance between tradition and contemporary minimalism. The quiet, gentle expressions on their faces convey purity, serenity, and protection—qualities deeply associated with Hina dolls, which are believed to guard young girls and bless them with happiness and healthy growth.

Set against a shimmering silver background, the composition feels both festive and refined, capturing the spirit of Hinamatsuri in a compact and artful format. Masumi Kobayashi’s signature completes the piece, marking it as a charming fusion of Japanese cultural symbolism and modern artistic sensibility.
